Dilation and Curettage (D&C)

What is Dilation and Curettage?

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure in which the cervix is dilated (opened) and the lining of the uterus is scraped away. This procedure is performed for a variety of reasons, including:

  • To remove tissue from the uterus for examination
  • To stop heavy bleeding
  • To treat an infection
  • To remove a polyp or fibroid

Procedure

D&C is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, which means that the patient can go home the same day. The procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia. The cervix is then dilated using a series of dilators. Once the cervix is dilated, a curette is inserted into the uterus and used to scrape away the lining of the uterus.

D&C typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete. After the procedure, the patient may experience some cramping and bleeding. These symptoms usually subside within a few days.

Risks

D&C is a relatively safe procedure, but it does carry some risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Damage to the cervix

Conclusion

Dilation and curettage is a safe and effective procedure for treating a variety of uterine conditions. However, it is important to be aware of the risks associated with the procedure before undergoing it.
