Germany thrash 10-man Scotland 5-1 in Euro 2024 opener

Ryan Porteous sent off as Scots suffer heavy defeat

Alex Scott presents the best of the action from the opening game at this summer's European Championship

Germany kicked off Euro 2024 in style with a 5-1 thrashing of 10-man Scotland in Munich on Friday night.

Ryan Porteous was sent off for the Scots in the first half, and the hosts took full advantage, with goals from Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Leon Goretzka, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane.

Scotland's consolation came from a John McGinn penalty.

The victory was Germany's biggest in a competitive match since they beat Brazil 7-1 in the 2014 World Cup semi-final.

It was also the first time that Scotland have conceded five goals in a competitive match since they lost 5-0 to England at Wembley in 1973.

The result leaves Scotland bottom of Group F after the first round of matches, while Germany are top.
