Conservatives Win Majority

Labour Suffers Heavy Losses

The 2019 United Kingdom general election, held on Thursday 12 December 2019, resulted in a Conservative victory. The party won 365 seats, 48 more than in 2017, and 43.6% of the vote, up from 42.3% in 2017. Labour, the main opposition party, suffered heavy losses, losing 60 seats and winning only 202 seats in total. The Liberal Democrats gained 11 seats to win 11 seats in total, while the Scottish National Party (SNP) gained 13 seats to win 48 seats in total. The Greens lost one seat, winning one seat in total, while Plaid Cymru and the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland each lost one seat, winning four and one seat respectively.

The Conservatives gained the most seats in areas in Wales and northern England that voted Leave in the 2016 EU referendum. The party also made gains in some Labour-held seats in the Midlands and southern England. Labour's losses were concentrated in its traditional strongholds in Scotland, the north of England, and Wales. The party also lost some seats in London and the south of England. The Liberal Democrats made gains in some Remain-voting areas, while the SNP made gains in Scotland.

The results of the 2019 general election have led to a Conservative majority government. The party has promised to "get Brexit done" and to "level up" the UK economy. Labour is now the main opposition party and will be looking to rebuild after its heavy losses. The Liberal Democrats, SNP, Greens, Plaid Cymru, and the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland will all be looking to play a role in holding the government to account.
