Stewart's death was announced by CNN on Thursday. The cause of death was not immediately released.
'She Was a Pioneer for Women in Politics'
Stewart was a longtime GOP adviser and CNN political commentator. She worked on several GOP presidential campaigns, including those of George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, and John McCain.
"Alice was a pioneer for women in politics," said CNN anchor Jake Tapper. "She was a smart, tough, and principled conservative who always spoke her mind."
Stewart was known for her sharp wit and her ability to articulate the conservative point of view. She was a frequent guest on CNN and other news networks, and she also wrote a column for The Hill newspaper.
